Suberin as a bio-based flame-retardant?

چکیده
Fire hazard is a constant risk in everyday life with the use of combustibles such as polymeric materials, wood, and fabrics, to name few. Halogenated compounds have been widely used efficient flame-retardants, often being applied coatings or impregnations. With growing environmental concerns regional bans on halogenated flame-retardant compounds, bio-based alternatives are garnering significant research interest. Naturally occurring materials eggshells, DNA, certain proteins developed self-defense mechanism against fire over millions years evolution. Cork, naturally biological tissue outer bark, interest it heat shield moisture repellent, specifically spacecraft. A deeper look into chemical structure cork indicates presence suberin, bio-polyester group that makes up much 40% its composition. These groups play key role protective barrier between plant surrounding external environment. Thus, suberin plants could be mimicked for design biobased materials.

Graphene phosphonic acid as an efficient flame retardant.
We report the preparation of graphene phosphonic acid (GPA) via a simple and versatile method and its use as an efficient flame retardant. In order to covalently attach phosphorus to the edges of graphene nanoplatelets, graphite was ball-milled with red phosphorus. The cleavage of graphitic C-C bonds during mechanochemical ball-milling generates reactive carbon species, which react with phospho...
متن کاملA review of flame retardant polypropylene fibres
Flame retardants for polypropylene (PP) and their potential suitability for use in fibre applications are reviewed. Five principal types of generic flame retardant systems for inclusion in polypropylene fibres have been identified as phosphoruscontaining, halogen-containing, silicon-containing, metal hydrate and oxide and the more recently developed nanocomposite flame retardant formulations. T...
متن کاملAssessing inter-generational transfer of a brominated flame retardant.
Studies have shown that the lipophilic nature of polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) causes it to preferentially accumulate in breast milk posing a potential hazard for suckling infants. The purpose of this study was to examine the inter-generational transfer of PBB from mother to child and whether this association was modified by maternal breast-feeding patterns. One hundred and forty-five mother-ch...

Epoxy-based Flame Retardant Nanocomposite Coatings: Comparison Between Functions of Expandable Graphite and Halloysite Nanotubes
Whis work presents a study on the flammability of epoxy coatings containing two types of nano-scale fillers as potential flame retardants: expandable graphite (EG) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). Both nanocomposites are prepared by incorporation of the same amount of nanofiller into the epoxy resin for the sake of comparison. Fire retardant nanocomposite coatings are cured through a two-stage ...
